Lech Poznań wrapped up a two-week match marathon with an away game against GKS Katowice. Niels Frederiksen’s team secured an important 1:0 victory, with Bryan Fiabema scoring the match-winning goal in the first half.
Lech’s players approached the final league game before the international break in good spirits. While their previous PKO BP Ekstraklasa matches ended in draws - a 2:2 tie against both Raków Częstochowa and Jagiellonia Białystok - on Thursday, they convincingly beat Rapid Wien 4:1 in the first league-phase game of the UEFA Conference League.
GKS Katowice posed a tough challenge for coach Frederiksen’s side. The hosts applied high pressing, which Lech initially managed to handle fairly well. GKS looked for opportunities primarily using the wings, but Borja Galán and Marcin Wasielewski were effectively neutralised. Lech, in turn, delivered just one blow in the first half, but it was a decisive one – in the 45th minute, Bryan Fiabema beat Rafał Strączek with a flat shot from outside the penalty area.
In the second half, the home side increased the pressure, but goalkeeper Bartosz Mrozek stayed sharp and made several important saves. Joel Pereira was also forced to intervene from the goal line when GKS sent a dangerous cross from the right flank into Lech’s box. In the added time, Lech came close to scoring for the second time - first through Taofeek Ismaheel, then Timothy Ouma - but the hosts managed to escape trouble, albeit luckily. Lech held on to the narrow lead and celebrated another three important league points.
