Widzew Łódź - Lech Poznań 2:3

Lech secured another league victory! Last Sunday, the Poznań side defeated Widzew 3:2 after a dramatic finale. Luis Palma scored the decisive goal in the 96th minute to seal the win.

Niels Frederiksen’s side is in excellent form and has now gone 14 league matches unbeaten. The last time Lech tasted defeat was at the beginning of March, when they were beaten 2:1 by Widzew.

Alongside their domestic success, the Poznań side is also competing on the international stage. Last week, they secured their place in the league phase of the Europa League, where they will play for the first time in six years. Following that achievement, it was time to return to league action.

The guests took the lead as early as the 6th minute thanks to Antoni Kozubal. Lech's Academy graduate found the net after a fantastic pass from Patrik Wålemark, who was positioned on the right flank. Shortly after, Widzew launched two attacks, but neither came close to changing the scoreline. It was not until the 21st minute that Lech created another really good goal-scoring opportunity. After winning the ball in the opponent's half, Pablo Rodríguez raced towards goal. The Spaniard spotted Wålemark arriving from the right, and the Swede skipped past his opponents before entering the penalty area. He then found Allahyar Sayyadmanesh with a pass, and the forward cut towards the right-hand post before doubling his side’s lead. Just moments later, Karol Świderski pulled one back after Mariusz Fornalczyk delivered the ball from the byline. Although both teams continued to look for further chances before half-time, the next goals did not come until after the break.

In the 53rd minute, Fornalczyk burst into the penalty area, fired from a tight angle and brought Widzew level. Over the following quarter, Lech applied heavy pressure as they looked to regain the lead. Wålemark, Berggren and Palma all tried their luck, but none found the net. Just before the final whistle, Żyro went down inside the penalty area following a free-kick. The referees immediately conducted a VAR review for a possible penalty. After several minutes, however, the officials spotted Steve Kapuadi's offside, and the penalty was subsequently overturned. Lech launched one final attack in the 96th minute. Drągowski made a mistake when leaving the goal line and was therefore unable to stop Palma - the Honduran fired a shot away at the last possible moment to secure a late victory for his side.

Frederiksen's side will now face another series of challenges. The squad from Poznań is about to embark on a marathon run of league fixtures. First, Lech will play two matches at Bułgarska Street: on Thursday, September 3rd, they will face Jagiellonia Białystok, before taking on Raków Częstochowa on Sunday, September 6th. A week later, on September 12th, they will travel to face Polish runners-up Górnik Zabrze. Before the international break, they will then fly to London to begin their Europa League league-phase campaign on September 17th.
