Three Lech Poznań players - Wojciech Mońka, Antoni Kozubal, and Michał Gurgul - featured in Poland's U21 clash on Tuesday. The side managed by Jerzy Brzęczek secured a 1:0 win against Montenegro in the qualifiers for the youth European Championship. For Mońka, it was an official debut in this age category.
The Polish squad has been displaying outstanding form throughout the ongoing U21 EURO qualifiers. Heading into the away clash with Montenegro, they boasted a perfect record of wins and consequently sat top of Group E. It was therefore no surprise that expectations of direct qualification for the tournament have grown considerably in Poland. However, securing all three points in Tuesday’s encounter was crucial, given that the hosts were in third place behind Poland and Italy.
All three Lech youth players - Kozubal, Gurgul and Mońka - were on the pitch from the start of the match. The first two are already regulars at this level, with the 2004-born midfielder serving as team captain. The left-back made his tenth appearance for Poland's U21 side, while for Mońka, it was an official debut. Lech's homegrown players went into the break in good spirits, as their team took a deserved lead in the 37th minute thanks to Marcel Krajewski.
The guests’ position became even more comfortable just after the hour mark, when Vladimir Perišić was sent off for a second yellow card, leaving the hosts a man down. With the numerical advantage, Poland controlled the match and pushed for a second goal to seal the result. However, the score remained unchanged until the final whistle, but not without some tense moments late on, when Mońka and his defensive teammates had to step up. Now, Poland is even closer to qualifying for the upcoming U21 EURO.
