In the second round of the Europa Conference League, Lech players travelled to Gibraltar to face Lincoln Red Imps. Niels Frederiksen’s squad failed to live up to their role as favourites and sensationally lost 1:2.
Coach Niels Frederiksen’s team had started their Conference League campaign very well, having defeated Rapid Vienna 4:1 in their opening match. That strong start put Lech in a good position ahead of their clash with Lincoln Red Imps. The champions of Gibraltar had already caused a surprise by advancing to the league stage of the competition, but in the previous match, they suffered a 0:5 defeat against Zrinjski Mostar.
The hosts surprised Lech with their commitment and style of play. Lincoln launched several dangerous counterattacks, and after one of them, De Barr hit the crossbar. Soon after, Yannick Agnero also struck the woodwork with a close-range header that was only slightly off target. That missed chance quickly came back to haunt Lech. Kike Gomez pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area and beat Bartosz Mrozek with a powerful shot. The Polish side tried to find its rhythm but couldn’t break through the well-organised Gibraltar defence.
Lech’s coaching staff reacted quickly, making four substitutions at halftime. The new players initially brought some freshness to the team’s offensive line, with Bryan Fiabema and Taofeek Ismaheel headers hitting the crossbar. Nano also came within millimetres of doubling the hosts’ lead with a beautifully struck free kick. Lech finally found the equaliser fifteen minutes before the end. Pablo Rodriguez was fouled in the box by the goalkeeper, and Mikael Ishak converted the penalty kick into a goal.
Just when it seemed that the guests had found their rhythm and were ready to turn the game in their favour, Lincoln struck back. In the last phase of the game, Christian Rutjens scored with a looping header over Bartosz Mrozek, securing a historic victory for his team.
