Lech Poznań won 2:1 in the clash with Cracovia and took advantage of their opponents losing league points. Mikael Ishak’s and Afonso Sousa’s goals helped Lech catch up to Raków Częstochowa, the current PKO BP Ekstraklasa leaders.
Niels Frederiksen’s squad has been having a good run the past few weeks – they won two important matches, against Korona Kielce and Motor Lublin, and, as a result, decreased the point gap to the league leaders, Raków Częstochowa. On Easter Saturday, Raków were defeated 0:1 by Pogoń Szczecin, which gave Lech the perfect chance to catch up to their opponent.
Frederiksen’s team kicked off the Monday match against Cracovia at a high pace. Within a short period, they created numerous goal-scoring chances. Ishak came the closest to changing the score, but neither his header nor his follow-up shot was good enough to beat Henrich Ravas. Patrik Walemark also had a perfect opportunity to score, but his shot from outside the box bounced off the crossbar. Finally, in the 38th minute, Lech got what they were after when Ali Gholizadeh sent a well-timed long ball to Ishak, and the captain beat Cracovia’s keeper with a precise shot.
The second half wasn’t as fast-paced as the first 45 minutes, and the fans gathered at the stadium in Poznań saw fewer goal-scoring chances. However, 20 minutes before the final whistle, Cracovia – quite unexpectedly – equalised. Bartosz Biedrzycki led the offensive attempt down the left flank and then crossed the ball into the box, right to Otar Kakabadze, who successfully redirected it into the back of the net. This wasn’t the end of the goals for Monday evening. Afonso Sousa, who came in after halftime, set the final score to 2:1 with a beautiful shot from outside the box. Niels Frederiksen’s players held onto the win until the final whistle and went home with three crucial league points.
