Lech players travelled to Genk for the return leg of the Europa League playoffs, looking to erase the poor impression left after the match in Poznań. Niels Frederiksen’s team won 2:1 thanks to goals from Kornel Lisman and Leo Bengtsson, but despite the score, they have been eliminated from the Europa League.
In spite of the painful 1:5 defeat in the first leg, Lech did not intend to change their playing style. The players from Poznań focused on the offence and successfully created goal-scoring opportunities, posing their biggest threat from corner kicks. However, headers from Timothy Ouma and Michał Gurgul both failed to find the net.
After half an hour, it was the home side who took the lead. Junya Ito capitalised on a misunderstanding among Lech’s defensive line and beat Bartosz Mrozek with a flat shot. However, just before the break, Lech managed to equalise - an impressive team effort from Bryan Fiabema and Kornel Lisman was finished off by the latter with a powerful shot under the crossbar.
Shortly after the referee began the second half, the guests struck again - Leo Bengtsson delivered a brilliant direct free-kick to give Lech the lead. Fifteen minutes later, the Swede found himself in a perfect position to change the score again, but this time his shot from inside the box was slightly off target.
In the final minutes, Genk pushed harder, but Lech’s defence didn’t budge and successfully stopped their opponent from equalising. As a result, the guests held on to the 2:1 score and went home with a win.
