Lech Poznań - KÍ Klaksvík 1:0

Following their defeat to Danish side Aarhus GF, Lech's Champions League qualifying campaign came to an end. The side from Poznań will now continue their European campaign in the third qualifying round of the Europa League. In the meantime, Lech also played their second league fixture of the season, beating Wieczysta Kraków 2:1 to claim their first three points of the campaign. The victory also extended Lech’s unbeaten league run to eleven matches.

Lech Poznań will be the first Polish side to face KÍ Klaksvík in European competition. The Faroese side have entered the Europa League qualifying rounds six times so far, but have only reached the group stage once - in the Conference League during the 2023/24 season. On that occasion, KÍ were drawn in Group A alongside Lille (0:0, 0:3), Slovan Bratislava (1:2, 1:2) and Olimpija Ljubljana (3:0, 0:2). They finished bottom of the group with four points.

Lech created their first real goal-scoring opportunity in the ninth minute. Following a foul by the guests, the referee awarded Lech a free-kick. Patrik Wålemark stepped up and struck the ball powerfully towards goal. Unfortunately, his effort flew just a few centimetres over the crossbar. The ball also sailed over the bar after a shot from Jóannes Danielsen.

In the 16th minute, Lech threatened inside the guests’ penalty area. Following a cross from Joel Pereira, Allahyar Sayyadmanesh reached the ball, but the Klaksvík goalkeeper saved the Iranian’s effort. Just moments later, the hosts attacked Mark Jensen’s goal again, but the Danish goalkeeper stayed alert. Lech continued to create chances, although the Faroese defenders successfully blocked their subsequent attempts.

After the break, Pablo Rodríguez came close to opening the scoring, but the Spaniard’s effort went wide. The pattern continued for much of the second half, with Luis Palma, Yannick Agnero and Mikael Ishak all trying their luck in front of goal, while Arni Frederiksberg caused problems on the other end of the pitch. However, none of the attempts was good enough to beat either goalkeeper and find the back of the net.

The breakthrough finally came in the 81st minute, courtesy of Lech’s Ivorian forward Agnero. The 23-year-old received the ball from Ishak and drove towards the guests’ penalty area. He outpaced the defenders, found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball between the posts.

Just two minutes later, Mateusz Lis produced an excellent save to deny Páll Klettskarð. In the final moments, Wålemark tried to add a second goal, but Jensen intervened without a mistake. Ishak also came close to scoring, but the Swede’s effort went just wide of the post.

The second leg between Lech Poznań and KÍ Klaksvík will take place on Thursday, August 13th, at the Faroe Islands’ national stadium. Before then, Lech face Piast Gliwice at Bułgarska Street on Sunday in their third PKO BP Ekstraklasa fixture of the season.
