On Sunday, Lech Poznań faced their last league opponent before the September international break - Widzew Łódź. Niels Frederiksen’s squad won the closely contested match 2:1 thanks to goals from Luis Palma and Bryan Fiabema.
Coach Niels Frederiksen’s team wrapped up an intense stretch of matches in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa and European competitions with the clash against Widzew Łódź. After a 2:1 win against KRC Genk, Lech bid farewell to the Europa League and will now compete in the league stage of the Europa Conference League starting in October.
The match against Widzew was balanced from the start, although the guests were the ones to create more goal-scoring chances, and it didn’t take them long to find the net. However, Bartłomiej Pawłowski’s goal was disallowed due to an offside. That moment sparked a reaction from Lech, who took the lead shortly afterwards. Joel Pereira delivered a perfect cross straight onto Luis Palma’s head, and the Honduran beat Maciej Kikolski with a precise header.
Near the end of the first half, Maciej Fornalczyk tried to surprise Bartosz Mrozek with a shot from the side of the box, but his attempt went just past the post.
Shortly after the break, Widzew equalised. Joao Moutinho fouled Juljan Shehu in the box, and Pawłowski converted the penalty kick into an equaliser. A few moments later, the guests came close to taking the lead when Fran Álvarez fired a dangerous long-range shot, but the ball hit the post.
In the 64th minute, Lech delivered the decisive blow, with Bryan Fiabema adding his name to the goal scorers’ list. The Norwegian reacted quickest in Widzew’s penalty area and slotted the ball home from close range.
Lech held onto their lead until the final whistle, securing another three points in the 2025/2026 season of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
