Lech fought until the very end for a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Niels Frederiksen’s team came very close to forcing extra time in the second leg of the clash with Shakhtar Donetsk, but the 2:1 win wasn’t enough, and the Polish side was eliminated from the competition.
In the first leg, Shakhtar Donetsk triumphed 3:1. The Ukrainians made the most of their individual quality and built a fairly solid advantage ahead of the return fixture. Lech came close to equalising in the first leg against the side coached by Arda Turan, thanks to a goal from Mikael Ishak. However, an overhead kick from Isaque gave the Ukrainian side greater comfort.
The match began brilliantly for the Polish side. Before the 15-minute mark had passed, Lech took a 1:0 lead after a cross from Taofeek Ismaheel was headed in by Mikael Ishak. Sensing their chance, the hosts pushed to increase the score as quickly as possible. The side managed by Niels Frederiksen got their reward just before half-time. A spectacular curling effort from Gísli Þórðarson was tipped behind for a corner by Dmytro Riznyk, but that was not the end of the Ukrainians’ troubles. Following the resulting set piece, the ball struck Kauã Elias's hand, and after a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, which Mikael Ishak converted into a second goal.
The following 45 minutes could have started just as perfectly for Lech as the first half, but Antoni Kozubal wasted a clear goal-scoring chance. Shortly afterwards, Gísli Þórðarson beat Dmytro Riznyk, but the goal was disallowed due to Pablo Rodríguez being offside. Shakhtar Donetsk were completely pinned back and unable to threaten their opponent. Despite this, the Ukrainian side pulled one back in a very fortunate manner. A cross from the left was flicked on by Wojciech Mońka, and Bartosz Mrozek inadvertently deflected the ball onto João Moutinho, who ended up placing it in his own net. Lech pushed until the final whistle in search of extra time, but in the end could only secure a 2:1 victory, which wasn’t enough for them to advance to the quarter-finals.
