After beating Pogoń Szczecin, Lech Poznań carried their momentum into the next round, defeating Legia Warsaw 4:0. It was their biggest-ever win over the side from the capital.
Lech went into Sunday’s match under pressure from Górnik Zabrze, who snatched a late 2:1 victory against Jagiellonia Białystok and drew level on points, emphasising their ambitions to win the title.
As expected, Lech dominated from the outset and gave the guests no chance in the first half. In the 3rd minute, Ali Gholizadeh finished a great team effort with a superb strike from outside the box, which Legia's keeper failed to stop. The hosts kept pushing, and Mikael Ishak came close to doubling the lead soon after, but ended up being denied by Otto Hindrich.
The decisive turning point came in the 18th minute when Rafał Augustyniak was sent off for a foul on Leo Bengtsson, leaving Legia a man down. Lech took full advantage: Ishak changed the score to 2:0 before Michał Gurgul pounced on a rebound from Patrik Walemark’s effort to make it 3:0. Just before half-time, Ishak added his second goal in a one-on-one situation, and Lech went down for halftime with a four-goal advantage.
After the break, Niels Frederiksen's side remained firmly in control but lacked a clinical edge. Bengtsson missed from close range, while Filip Jagiełło struck the post from distance. The hosts comfortably saw out the match, maintaining their four-goal lead and taking a major step towards retaining the Polish Championship title.
