On Sunday, Lech played one of their final matches of the year. Niels Frederiksen’s squad faced the Ekstraklasa newcomers, Wisła Płock, on a challenging pitch. Despite Lech’s determined efforts, the match ended in a 0:0 draw, and the side from Poznań managed to bring home only a single point from Płock.
After two seasons in the lower division, Wisła successfully returned to the top tier. Despite their long absence, the side from Płock have been at the top of the table since the start of the campaign and have been picking up points consistently, especially when playing at home. Mariusz Misiura’s team is also known for having the strongest defence in the entire league.
The match began intensely, with Lech putting pressure on their opponents right from the start. They wanted to play openly and tried to break into the hosts’ penalty area to create good goal-scoring opportunities. Despite their persistent efforts, none of their many chances ended in a goal - Frederiksen’s squad lacked the finishing touch. Over the course of the match, they produced 25 shots, of which only two were on target. The hosts sat very deep, effectively stopping Lech’s efforts. When Misiura’s side did regain possession, they usually lost it quickly, clearly prioritising a clean sheet and a single point. Unfortunately for Frederiksen’s side, who entered the match with far more ambitious aims, the “Pride of Mazovia” achieved their objective and held onto a draw against Niels Frederiksen’s team.
After their impressive 4:1 win over Radomiak, Lech’s players and supporters had high hopes ahead of the clash with Wisła, but the team returned to Poznań disappointed and hungry for further victories and points that would help them climb the table. Their next, and also final, PKO BP Ekstraklasa match of the year will be played this upcoming weekend against Cracovia.
