Lech Poznań joined the Polish Cup rivalry in the first round. They travelled to Rzeszów to compete against the local third-division club Resovia. The match ended in a surprising, 1:0 win for the hosts and it was Resovia that advanced to the next round of the tournament.
The clash in Rzeszów was preceded by Lech’s impressive run in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa – Niels Frederiksen’s players won five league games, putting them at the top of the table. Hence, it was no surprise Lech was deemed the favourite in the clash with the third-division rival.
Resovia undoubtedly shocked the squad from Poznań with their boldness. The hosts came close to scoring in their first offensive attempt but Filip Bednarek successfully stopped Danian Pavlas’s two shots. On the other end of the pitch, Antoni Kozubal had a good opportunity to change the score but the youngster’s shot in a one-on-one clash with Michał Gliwa was off target. In the 16th minute, the hosts found the back of the net – Maksymilian Hebel’s strong shot under the crossbar left Bednarek helpless. Frederiksen’s players were determined to equalize but they had few good chances to do so.
Resovia kept on attacking in the second half, despite the favourable score. Pavlas even hit the crossbar once, and so did Joel Pereira on the other end of the field. It was Lech’s best goal-scoring opportunity of the match and in the end, Frederiksen’s squad failed to turn the tables and was eliminated from the Polish Cup.
