Polish Cup: Lech Poznań - Wisła Cracow 1:1

In the first leg of the Polish Cup quarterfinals Lech Poznan drew with Wisla Cracow 1:1. Brozek scored a goal for Wisla shortly after halftime and Dawid Kownacki equalized later in the second half.

Lech’s clash with the White Star lacked one important element… the spectators. The Polish Football Association punished the team from Poznan for its fans’ behaviour in the last year’s Polish Cup final. Lech’s supporters have already missed three games of the national competition due to the ban.

The Tuesday game was far from exhilarating. The play in the midfield was chaotic and therefore both teams struggled to build a decent offensive action. Lech was the first one who managed to do so. In the 5th minute Kedziora received a pass from Robak and raced into the penalty area, but his cross was successfully blocked by the rivals. A few minutes later Majewski decided to fire a shot at the goal, but his attempt was easily stopped by the goalkeeper.

Wisla had its goal-scoring opportunities as well. Brozek was active in the rival’s penalty area, but his attempts weren’t on target. In the 36th minute Lech had a chance to counterattack. Gajos was fouled on Lech’s half of the pitch and his teammates quickly resumed the play. Robak and Majewski built a rapid offensive action, but the latter’s shot wasn’t problematic for the goalkeeper.

The second half started with Wisla taking the lead. In the 48th minute Jovic received a long ball from Maczynski and sent a cross into the penalty area where Brozek was already waiting to redirect the ball into the goal. Having conceded a goal, Lech focused on the offensive and put an emphasis on both wings, but neither did Makuszewski, not Kedziora manage to cause trouble to Wisla’s defensive line with their crosses.

In the 67th minute Lech had a great goal-scoring opportunity when Makuszewski and Gajos played a quick offensive action which Popovic stopped at the last moment. Kownacki had two chances to score as well, but the youngster either received poor passes, or his attempts weren’t on target. However, in the 78th minute Lech scored an equalizer. Robak found some space on the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot that was stopped by the goalkeeper, but since Zaluska failed to catch the ball, Kownacki recovered it and sent it flying into the back of the net.

The hosts were determined to win the match, but neither did Majewski, nor Robak manage to score a second goal, thus the match ended with a 1:1 draw and neither of the sides was much closer to the Polish Cup semi-finals.
