Niels Frederiksen’s side shows no signs of slowing down – on Saturday, they secured yet another league victory. After beating Wisła Cracow 3:1, Lech have strengthened their position at the top of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table and now hold a three-point lead over second-placed Górnik Zabrze.
Frederiksen’s squad is now nearing the end of their October fixture marathon. Since returning to training following the three-week international break, the Poznań side have played three PKO BP Ekstraklasa matches, beating Śląsk Wrocław (4:1), Korona Kielce (6:1) and Legia Warsaw (2:1). In between, they have competed in the Europa League league phase and the Polish Cup. Their busy schedule continued on Saturday with a clash against Wisła Cracow, who have returned to the top flight this season.
Both teams looked to break through their opponents’ defences and create clear-cut scoring opportunities from the opening minutes at Bułgarska Street. Lech were the first to come close - in the 9th minute, Patrik Wålemark had the first chance to open the scoring, but his effort was confidently stopped by the opponent’s goalkeeper. A few moments later, the 25-year-old found himself inside the penalty area once again. The Swedish winger went one-on-one with the keeper and took another shot, but this time the ball flew over the crossbar.
Wålemark tried again in the 17th minute. He rose to meet an excellent cross from Joel Pereira, but Marcel Łubik produced another good save. The 22-year-old goalkeeper was called into action once more in the 29th minute, when Yannick Agnero and Pablo Rodríguez combined efforts. Wålemark finished the move, but he couldn't find the breakthrough. The hosts did not have to wait long for another attempt from the Swedish forward - in the 34th minute, Wålemark brought the ball under control superbly before shooting from around the edge of the penalty area, but the ball stopped on the post.
The second half followed a similar pattern - Lech continued to dominate possession and put the guests under pressure as they searched for all three points. Their persistence paid off in the 54th minute - Pereira passed the ball to Leo Bengtsson, who beat his defender with an impressive piece of skill before sending a precise pass to Antoni Kozubal. The midfielder kept his composure and calmly opened the scoring.
The team from Cracow did not take long to respond. Less than two minutes later, they broke into the hosts’ half. Duarte delivered a cross into the box, and Krzyżanowski rose to meet it with a header to level the score. However, Wisła's celebrations were short-lived. Lech quickly regained control and pinned their opponents back in their own half. Following a spell of patient possession, Patrik Wålemark restored Lech’s lead. In the 64th minute, Yannick Agnero put the result beyond doubt. The Ivorian striker collected a superb long pass from Radosław Murawski, brought the ball under control and picked the perfect moment to shoot, sending it straight into the back of the net.
Wisła tried to find a way back into the match, but despite being awarded a penalty, they failed to convert the set piece. Lech had another chance in added time, but Wisła’s goalkeeper intervened perfectly.
Frederiksen’s men have two more fixtures to play before the November international break. First, Lech will travel to Lisbon for their second away match in the league phase of the Europa League, where they will face Benfica – the 38-time Champions of Portugal. They will then return to Bułgarska Street on Sunday to take on Zagłębie Lubin in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
