Piast Gliwice – Lech Poznań 0:2

In the 31st round of PKO Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznań beat the current Polish Champions, Piast Gliwice, in an away clash. Despite the fact that Lech played in 10 men since the start of the second half, Moder and Tiba both scored and helped the team win 2:0.

The match in Gliwice was important for both team since Lech wants to be in the league’s top three and Piast – currently ranked second – needed three points to keep up with the current leaders, i.e. Legia Warsaw. The fact that both teams had a lot at stake and couldn’t afford any mistakes, along with the rainy weather and challenging conditions resulted in a poor first half. Tiba’s and Moder’s shots were the two key highlights of the first 45 minutes, and they weren’t even on target. Piast’s performance wasn’t much better – the hosts didn’t get a since shot on target in the whole first half.

The start of the second half wasn’t what Lech’s players were expecting. Shortly after the first whistle, Rogne accidentally elbowed Parzyszek in the face mid-air and received a second yellow card which meant that the team from Poznań was down to 10 men. Piast took advantage of the new circumstances and started intensifying their offensive attempts, however, neither Milewski, Vida, Parzyszek nor Hateley managed to convert their scoring chances into goals. Just when it seemed that it was just a matter of time before Piast would score, Lech took the lead. The team from Poznań was awarded a free kick on the left-hand side of the box which Moder converted into a beautiful, technical shot right into the corner of the goal which left the goalkeeper helpless. The conceded goal only further motivated the hosts. However, Lech was defending intelligently and didn’t allow their opponents to come too close to the goal. Whenever Piast’s players found some space to shoot, their attempts were either off-target or effortlessly stopped by van der Hart. Kirkeskov came close to scoring, but his shot bounced off the crossbar.

Piast had two more good goal-scoring opportunities which caused problems to Lech’s defensive line, but the squad from Poznań had some luck. Just when the referee was about to end the match, Marchwiński initiated a counterattack which Tiba converted into a second goal with a light but precise shot. The 2:0 win helped Lech move to third place in the league table. The team from Poznań is now just one point behind Piast Gliwice.
