Another player returns to Lech Poznań. On Tuesday afternoon, Mateusz Lis signed a contract with the Polish Champions until June 30th, 2029. Mateusz, welcome back!
A few days ago, Lech activated the buyout clause for Luis Palma, making his transfer from Celtic FC permanent. Now the club have completed their first signing of the summer. Joining the Polish Champions is Mateusz Lis, who has been associated with the blue-and-white colours since the age of sixteen. The 29-year-old goalkeeper returns to Lech from Turkish side Göztepe. During his time at the İzmir-based club, he made 99 appearances and kept 44 clean sheets.
In total, he has made 101 appearances in the Süper Lig, Turkey’s top division. Not only did he compete for Göztepe, with whom he earned promotion to the top division two years ago, but he also played for Altay SK, where he appeared in 35 games.
“We are delighted to welcome Mateusz Lis back to the club. He has signed a contract with Kolejorz until June 30th, 2029. Mateusz returns home after spells both in Poland and abroad. He has gained valuable experience and developed further as a player, and he will now strengthen competition among goalkeepers,” said Lech's Sporting Director, Tomasz Rząsa.
Lis first wore the blue-and-white shirt in 2013 and won the Polish Super Cup with the club. He progressed through Lech’s youth teams before spending time on loan at Miedź Legnica, Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała, and Raków Częstochowa. In July 2019, he joined Wisła Kraków permanently, where he made his Ekstraklasa debut and went on to make 69 appearances in Poland’s top division.
In the years that followed, in addition to his spells in Poland and Turkey, he also represented the English side Southampton FC and the French club ESTAC Troyes.
“Returning to Lech is a special moment for me. It has taken some time to get back here. It still hasn’t fully sunk in, and I’ll need some time to get used to it, but it means a great deal to me, and my heart beat a little faster today. I’m a more mature person now and I’ve developed not only as a footballer but also personally. I have a family, a wife and a son. In that respect, I’ve grown up as well,” said the 29-year-old goalkeeper.
Lis returns to Poznań and will soon have the opportunity to make his official first-team debut for Lech. He will wear number 1 on his back.
