Lech Poznań - Lechia Gdańsk 1:3

After an almost two-month winter break, the PKO BP Ekstraklasa resumed. However, Lech will not remember their first official match of 2026 fondly, as they rather unexpectedly lost 1:3 to Lechia Gdańsk at home.

Both Lech Poznań fans and players approached the start of the spring round with high hopes. Niels Frederiksen’s team prepared for the second half of the season in great conditions in Abu Dhabi, where they played three friendly matches. Moreover, Patrik Walemark finally returned to the squad after a knee injury, which had kept him absent for the past few months.

The match against Lechia began in the worst possible way for the hosts. The team from the seaside took the lead as early as the 2nd minute, thanks to Tomasz Neugebauer’s precise strike from inside the penalty area. Lech struggled to find their rhythm in the harsh winter conditions, although they did manage to equalise before halftime. Leo Bengtsson picked out Ali Gholizadeh in the box, and the Iranian found the net at the second attempt. Late in the first half, the hosts had a chance to score a second goal, but they lacked the necessary finishing touch.

The second half started for Lechia in much the same way as the first. Antonio Milić made an unfortunate intervention when dealing with a cross and put the ball inside his own net. Once again, Frederiksen’s players needed a moment to recover, but in the meantime, they suffered another blow. Mateusz Skrzypczak mishandled the ball while trying to play out from the back, which led to Tomas Bobcek scoring the third goal. The hosts fought until the very end in an attempt to equalise, but individual efforts from Luis Palma and Patrik Walemark failed to produce the desired result. The reigning Polish Champions will have a chance to put this disappointing loss behind them on Tuesday, as they face Piast Gliwice in a postponed fixture.
