Lech Poznań – FK Austria Wien 4:1
On Thursday evening, Lech delivered a performance just like in the old days. Back in 2008, the team from Poznań beat FK Austria Wien 4:2 in one of the most exhilarating matches in the club’s history and advanced to the group phase of the UEFA Cup. After 14 years, Lech once again faced the Austrian rival – this time in the Europa Conference League – and triumphed 4:1, yet again.
A week ago, Lech kicked off the Europa Conference League group phase with an away match against Villarreal. Although the Poles ended up losing 3:4, they delivered a great performance. Meanwhile, in the following match, against Austria Wien, everything seemed to have gone perfectly according to plan, from the style of play to the final score.
However, the first half didn’t necessarily forecast a good outcome for the hosts. Lech did manage to score the first goal thanks to Mikael Ishak’s stone-cold, precise finish of a counterattack, Austria Wien replied very quickly with a goal from Matthias Braunoder, and a few minutes later, they could have turned the tables with a penalty kick which was a result of Pedro Rebocho’s foul. Luckily for Lech, Filip Bednarek rose to the challenge and successfully stopped Manfred Fischer’s shot from the white spot.
In the second half, Lech made it clear that they deserved to win the three points. First, Michał Skóraś placed the ball in the back of the Austrian net for the second time that night with a beautiful volley, and then Kristoffer Velde, who came in from the bench, added two more goals and set the final score to 4:1. Was Lech more precise in their attempts, they could have won by even more goals.
Following the two group-stage matches, Lech is ranked second in Group C of the Europa Conference League. Next, they will face Hapoel Beer Sheva at home, in October.
Before the players leave for the international break, Lech has one more league game to play – a local derby against Warta Poznań, played at Bułgarska Street. The kick-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
