Górnik Zabrze - Lech Poznań 2:1

Lech have made their best start to a season in the 21st century. Before their trip to Zabrze, the Poznań side were still unbeaten in the league, having suffered their last loss at the beginning of March this year.

Moreover, Frederiksen and his men are also set to begin their Europa League league-phase campaign this week. The team will travel to London for their opening fixture, where they will face the Premier League side Crystal Palace. However, before turning their attention to European competition, Lech still had to face Polish runners-up and Polish Cup winners - Górnik Zabrze.

Both teams started the match with plenty of intensity. Lech managed to break through the hosts’ defence in the 14th minute - they worked the ball through midfield before Allahyar Sayyadmanesh received a pass on the edge of the penalty area. The Iranian dribbled past his opponents and got the first shot away, but the ball was tipped over the crossbar by the goalkeeper.

Moments later, Mateusz Lis produced an excellent save to keep out Khalna’s powerful freekick. In the 36th minute, Frederiksen’s side created another dangerous opportunity. Patrik Wålemark delivered the ball into the penalty area, and Schulze failed to clear it, allowing Sayyadmanesh to fire a header. The Iranian lobbed the goalkeeper and opened the scoring.

The next clear-cut chances did not arrive until the second half. The hosts searched for an opportunity to threaten Lech and equalise, and they finally succeeded in the 76th minute thanks to Erik Prekop. Following a well-worked corner and a cross from Kacper Urbański, the Slovakian beat Mateusz Lis to bring Górnik level. Just moments later, an almost identical set-piece routine resulted in Górnik’s second goal. The Slovakian struck again to put his side ahead. Shortly before the final whistle, Michał Gurgul tried his luck from distance, but the Academy homegrown player’s effort was too strong and flew over the crossbar.

Lech now turn their attention to European competition. On Thursday, Frederiksen’s squad will begin their Europa League league-phase campaign with a trip to London to face Crystal Palace. They will then return to league action, hosting Radomiak Radom at Bułgarska Street.
