Focusing on fitness
Dr Martin Mayer, Lech’s fitness coach, points out the team’s good physical condition. The staff member proves his point by emphasizing the last-minute goal scored by Lech in the last league game.
Lech Poznań set the score in the recent clash late in the 89th minute. “We scored in the closing minutes and set the final result. The goal is a proof that the team is in a good shape,” said the fitness coach. “We retrieved back in the last minutes of the game, but it wasn’t due to the players’ physical condition, but the tactics. We wanted to defend the score and focus on the counterattacks,” explained Mayer.
Lech is now awaiting the league match in Gdańsk. The team did not lose any of the past 5 games against Lechia. “We are aware that we will need a lot of energy to win the match. Fitness is always a key element. The players need to stay fresh and focused till the final whistle. When playing against such a class team the closing minutes might be decisive,” highlighted the coach.
The preparations to the clash with Lechia do not only take place on the pitch, but also in the gym. The specific sessions are crucial since the new coach puts a great emphasis on pressing. “The team is in a good shape, but we are still working on elements like endurance and strength. We know that there are things that can and need to be improved,” explained dr Mayer.
