Lech claim another impressive victory as Wålemark scores a brace. Niels Frederiksen and his men resumed league action after the international break with a confident, 4:1 triumph against Śląsk Wrocław, which put them in second place in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table.
Niels Frederiksen’s side can look back on a successful start to the season: seven wins, one draw, and one defeat - Lech’s new league record. On top of that, the Poznań team are competing in the league phase of the Europa League for the first time in six years. A demanding run of fixtures now awaits Lech - the first team from Bułgarska Street has seven matches scheduled for October alone. Following the international break, they began this intense period with a clash against Śląsk Wrocław, who have returned to the top flight after spending last season in the second tier. Next week, Lech face a tough test against German side Bayer Leverkusen before rounding off the week with a home fixture against Korona Kielce.
The first dangerous scoring chance of Saturday’s match was created by the hosts. Just before the half-hour mark, Matsenko tested Lech’s defence, but Mateusz Lis dealt with the effort effectively. Lech’s first attempt to break the deadlock came in the 31st minute. Pablo Rodríguez dribbled past Śląsk’s defenders down the right flank and delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Mateusz Skrzypczak rose to meet the ball with a header. Lech’s Academy graduate redirected the ball towards Filip Jagiełło, whose strong shot hit the back of the net.
Both sides looked for another goal before the break, but neither Samiec-Talar’s effort nor Robert Gumny’s attempt changed the scoreline. The next goal came shortly after the restart when Rodríguez unleashed a powerful, precise shot from outside the penalty area. A deflection wrong-footed the goalkeeper, and the score changed to 2:0 for Lech.
The Spaniard went in search of a second goal soon afterwards, but this time his effort failed to pass Niemczycki. In the 64th minute, Joel Pereira produced a superb intervention, clearing Dembele’s shot as it looked destined for the goal. Frederiksen’s side responded almost immediately. After the home goalkeeper had kicked the ball back into play, Lech won possession and launched an attack straight away. Patrik Wålemark received a pass from Mikael Ishak and surged towards the penalty area. He outmanoeuvred a Śląsk defender inside the box and scored his first goal of the match.
Wålemark's second goal came not long later. In the 73rd minute, the Swede received a precise pass from Daniel Håkans near the edge of the penalty area and beat Śląsk’s goalkeeper once again. Just before the final whistle, the Wrocław side pulled one back to score a consolation goal. The hosts were awarded a corner kick, and Tomasiewicz rose above the defence and headed the ball into the net.
The three points helped Lech jump into second place in the table. They will look to add another three points on Sunday when they host Korona Kielce at Bułgarska Street. Before then, however, Frederiksen’s men have another Europa League challenge to face - this Thursday, Lech will take on the German side Bayer Leverkusen at Enea Stadium.
