Lech Poznań were crowned Polish Champions of the 2024/2025 season! Niels Frederiksen’s squad beat Piast Gliwice 1:0 in the last league game of the season - thanks to a goal from Afonso Sousa - and held onto the advantage over Raków Częstochowa, which ultimately gave them the Championship title. It’s the 9th top-division trophy in the club’s history.
The situation before the last league round of the season was clear: in order for Lech to win the Championship title, they needed to win their match. In any other scenario, they would have to hope for Raków, who were facing Widzew Łódź at home, to lose points as well. The emotions were running high at Enea Stadium, which was filled to the brim. At first, it looked like the pressure might have overwhelmed Lech’s players. Piast was in control of the game and created more goal-scoring chances, whereas the hosts had trouble causing problems to their opponent’s defensive line. However, in the 39th minute, the tables have turned, all thanks to Afonso Sousa, who converted a pass from Rasmus Carstensen into a precise header that Frantisek Plach had no chance of stopping.
In the second half, Lech regained control of the game and even found the back of the net again, but Carstensen’s goal was disallowed due to Mikael Ishak’s offside, which was called by VAR. The last minutes of the Saturday match were nerve-wrecking for the hosts and their supporters; Piast seemed determined to equalise and pressured Lech to move into defence. Shortly before the final whistle, Jorge Felix hit the post, and just seconds before the celebrations began, Mario Gonalez was forced to intervene from the goalline. But since Lech successfully held onto the one-goal advantage, once Szymon Marciniak blew the final whistle, the players, staff, and the 41-thousand crowd enjoyed joyous celebrations.
