Aarhus GF - Lech Poznań 1:4

Lech Poznań have kicked off another European campaign. As was the case last season, the Polish Champions started from the second qualifying round, where they were drawn against one of the strongest possible opponents - the reigning Danish Champions, Aarhus GF.

Last year, Lech's Champions League journey ended in the third qualifying round after they were eliminated by Red Star Belgrade. The squad from Poznań then dropped into the UEFA Europa League before continuing their European adventure in the UEFA Conference League, where they reached the Round of 16. This season, Niels Frederiksen's side are determined to secure a place in Europe's top-tier competition and will be aiming to keep that dream alive in the weeks ahead.

For Aarhus GF, meanwhile, this marks their first-ever appearance in the Champions League qualifiers. In previous seasons, they competed in qualifying rounds for the Europa League and Conference League but never reached the league phase of either competition.

The home side made the brighter start and dictated the tempo in the opening stages. However, Lech gradually wrestled back control after the first 15 minutes and soon began to dominate on the pitch. Their pressure paid off in the 29th minute when Joel Pereira won possession high up the pitch before embarking on a run. The ball eventually reached Mikael Ishak, whose composed finish gave the guests the lead.

Another key moment arrived five minutes later when Luis Palma appealed for handball after Aarhus goalkeeper Jesper Hansen handled the ball outside his penalty area. Following a VAR review, the Finnish referee showed the 41-year-old a straight red card. Down to ten men, the Danish Champions were forced into an immediate tactical reshuffle, and Lech wasted little time in making their numerical advantage count.

Patrik Wålemark doubled the lead with a well-worked move. The Swedish winger beat his defender before finding Antoni Kozubal, then continued his run into space. Kozubal returned the pass perfectly, allowing Wålemark to calmly slot the ball into the net.

The second half brought even more goals. Aarhus showed no intention of giving up on their Champions League hopes and struck back in the 53rd minute. A swift counter-attack ended with Kristian Arnstad pulling one back to make it 2:1.

Any hopes of a comeback, however, were quickly extinguished. 60 minutes into the match, Terry Yegbe produced the goal of the night, unleashing a sensational strike from around 30 metres that flew into the top corner of Mads Hedenstad's net.

Lech wrapped up an emphatic victory just five minutes later. After an excellent delivery from Luis Palma, Wålemark was once again in the right place at the right time, finishing clinically to claim his second goal of the evening and seal a confident 4:1 win.

The result gives Lech a solid advantage ahead of the return leg in Poznań on Wednesday, where they will look to book their place in the next qualifying round. On Tuesday, Frederiksen and his players will also discover their potential opponents should they progress to the next stage of the Champions League qualifiers.
