Lech Poznań recorded their second consecutive league victory. Niels Frederiksen’s side confidently defeated Piast Gliwice 3:0 at home thanks to goals from Ali Gholizadeh, Pablo Rodríguez, and Yannick Agnero. Now, Lech can start preparing for their upcoming Europa Conference League fixture in high spirits.
The team managed by Niels Frederiksen have found their rhythm after a sluggish start to the spring round. A week earlier, Lech secured an important 1:0 victory over Górnik Zabrze, with the decisive goal coming at the very beginning of the match from Mikael Ishak. Against Piast Gliwice, Lech had to cope without their captain, who was suspended for accumulating yellow cards. The reigning Polish Champions also had a score to settle with the Silesian side, having lost 1:0 to them less than a fortnight ago.
Lech began the encounter with Piast in much the same way as they had against Górnik. The hosts took an early lead courtesy of Ali Gholizadeh’s superb strike from outside the penalty area. Frederiksen’s team went with the flow and, less than three minutes later, increased their lead. Rodríguez produced an equally impressive long-range shot, leaving František Plach with no chance. Piast tried to get back into the game, but Lech’s defence remained alert.
In the second half, the hosts controlled the match and looked to extend their lead, although they lacked a clinical edge. Gholizadeh found himself in a great scoring position but failed to convert it into the third goal; so did Agnero, who squandered an excellent opportunity from close range. The Ivorian eventually found the back of the net just before the final time, converting a cross from Michał Gurgul with a well-timed header, and setting the score to 3:0. As a result, Lech kept a second consecutive clean sheet. On Thursday, Frederiksen’s players will face KuPS in the UEFA Europa Conference League knockout stage playoffs.
