Six Academy players helped to secure the win
On Saturday, Lech Poznań defeated Górnik 1:0 in an away league clash. Notably, as many as six Academy players were on the pitch in the second half. “We are happy to help the team in such difficult matches as the Saturday one, especially when we end up winning,” said Lech’s defender Michał Gurgul.
Goalkeeper Bartosz Mrozek, defenders Robert Gumny, Wojciech Mońka and Michał Gurgul, as well as central midfielder Antoni Kozubal, were a part of the Saturday starting line-up. Right after the break, Mateusz Skrzypczak came on to replace Antonio Milić, joining his Academy colleagues. As a result, the entire defensive unit – the goalkeeper, the four centre-backs and the defensive midfielder – consisted of Lech’s Academy players.
“It’s great that such a big club as Lech gives chances to so many Academy players. Antek Kozubal, Wojtek Mońka and I were in the boarding school in Wronki together; we’ve known each other for a long time, and that certainly helps us on the pitch. We are happy to help the team in such difficult matches as the Saturday one, especially when we end up winning; of course, together with the more experienced players,” explained Gurgul.
Lech beat Górnik 1:0 and, importantly, kept their first clean sheet of the spring round. “We lost to Piast on Tuesday, but even then, the defence looked better. We worked on preventing counter-attacks, and I think we managed that in both matches – it’s not a major problem. This time it certainly wasn’t about luck, but about the work we’ve put in during training,” highlighted the 20-year-old player. “One of the key objectives before kick-off was to keep a clean sheet. We managed that; we helped each other in defence and, despite Górnik’s pressure, we held on until the end,” he added.
Lech received a boost of positive energy in Upper Silesia after their poor start to the spring campaign. “It’s always good to break a bad run. It gives you momentum for the next part of the season. However, this match is already history; we’re now focusing on the challenges ahead,” concluded Gurgul.
