Lech Poznań defender Joel Pereira has scored in two consecutive matches. However, Sunday afternoon brought mixed emotions for him - while he found the net again, he also scored an own goal early on, and Lech ended up sharing points with their opponent, Motor Lublin, as the game ended in a 2:2 draw. “We’ll soon be in December, which means halfway through the season, so we need to wake up,” emphasised the Portuguese player.
The current campaign is Pereira’s fifth season at Lech, and this one is already his most prolific in terms of goals - he has scored four times since July, almost doubling his total from the previous four seasons combined, when he netted a total of five goals. The right-footed defender is known more for providing assists, but recently Pereira has shown an excellent instinct in front of the goal. He’s scored in two consecutive matches – in the Polish Cup clash with Gryf Słupsk on Thursday (2:1), and again on Sunday, in the league match against Motor.
When was the last time a Lech defender scored in two consecutive games? You have to go back to the Championship-winning 2021/2022 season, when Antonio Milić achieved that feat - and even bettered it, scoring in three successive league matches against Warta Poznań (2:0), Zagłębie Lubin (3:2), and Górnik Zabrze (2:1). Now Joel has a chance to do the same - or more - provided he scores again on Thursday, when Lech will face Rayo Vallecano away in the Europa Conference League.
For Pereira, Sunday was bittersweet: he was delighted with his goal, but earlier during the match, he had turned the ball into his own net while trying to block an opponent, inadvertently wrong-footing Bartosz Mrozek.
“Once again, we made mistakes at home that cost us the victory. We need to analyse this match, identify our errors, and prepare for Thursday’s game in Madrid. As for the Ekstraklasa, we’ll soon be in December, halfway through the season, so we must wake up. Last season, we beat almost every team when playing at home. Now we’re struggling to win matches and often drawing them. We’re picking up more points away from home, and we need to take some positives from that,” admitted the Portuguese defender after the final whistle.
