Red Star Belgrade - Lech Poznań 1:1

Following a 1:3 defeat to Red Star Belgrade at the Enea Stadium, Lech Poznań travelled to Serbia for the return leg. Niels Frederiksen’s squad fought until the final minute, but the 1:1 wasn’t enough to advance to the Champions League playoffs. Mikael Ishak scored the only goal for the Polish side.

Coach Niels Frederiksen’s team postponed their weekend league game against Piast Gliwice to best prepare for the second leg of the clash against Red Star Belgrade. Hence, Lech had the entire week to rest and come up with the right tactics for their Serbian opponent.

The match at Belgrade’s Marakana stadium began differently from the one in Poznań. Lech came out boldly, showing no fear of their opponent, and in the first 15 minutes, they dominated the game. Luis Palma even fired a dangerous shot from a free kick, but it wasn’t good enough to change the score. As the game progressed, the hosts began to gain more control. Bartosz Mrozek made an excellent save when Timi Elsnik tried to surprise him with a good shot, and then again when Cherif Ndiaye’s follow-up shot was heading in the direction of the net. However, Red Star Belgrade’s striker managed to beat the Polish goalkeeper just before halftime. The Senegalese was fouled inside the box and then converted the penalty kick into a goal.

In the second half, Lech tried to equalise, but their attacks lacked pace. The hosts were well organised defensively, even when playing with a man down after Rodrigao was shown a red card for a foul on Leo Bengtsson. However, Lech eventually got their goal. Mikael Ishak took advantage of the chaos inside the box and beat Matheus with a flat shot.

The 1:1 draw eliminates Lech from the Champions League qualifiers, but they will begin their Europa League campaign next week. On Thursday, they will face the Belgian side K.R.C. Genk in the first leg of the playoffs.
