GKS Katowice - Lech Poznań 2:2

In the pre-last round of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznań travelled to Katowice to face the local team GKS. The hosts challenged Niels Frederiksen’s squad, and the match ended in a 2:2 draw. However, the one point was enough for Lech to hold onto the leader’s seat.

Frederiksen’s players had a perfect opportunity to make another big step towards winning the Polish Championship since their main opponent, Raków Częstochowa, lost points in the clash with Korona Kielce (1:1). If Lech won, they’d have a 3-point advantage over their rival; however, this task wasn’t as easy as some might have expected. GKS Katowice was determined to win, and they even scored early in the match when Oskar Repka took advantage of the chaos inside Lech’s box and cleverly placed the ball in the net. Frederiksen’s squad focused on equalising as quickly as possible – Ali Gholizadeh’s technical shot was just slightly off target, but Patrik Walemark’s attempt in the 43rd minute was spot on and the Swedish striker celebrated another goal from outside the box.

However, the equaliser didn’t dim the hosts’ determination, and in the 59th minute, they took the lead once again. A cross from the right flank reached Bartosz Nowak, with a little bit of luck, and the player put the ball in the net from a close distance. Shortly afterwards, GKS had the perfect opportunity to seal the deal with a third goal when Mateusz Mak came one-on-one with Bartosz Mrozek, but the goalkeeper’s brilliant intervention saved Lech’s shot at winning the Championship title. The wasted goal-scoring opportunity took revenge on the hosts – Joel Pereira crossed the ball into the box, right on Antonio Milic’s head, and the latter’s shot bounced off Mario Gonzalez before flying past the confused keeper and into the net. It was the Spaniard’s first goal for Lech Poznań, and an important one, since it kept Lech in the game. In the last round of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Frederiksen’s squad needs to win to celebrate the Polish Championship title.
