Breiðablik - Lech Poznań 0:1
Lech Poznań secured a spot in the third round of the Champions League qualifiers by defeating Breiðablik 1:0. Mikael Ishak scored the winner in the first half.
Coach Niels Frederiksen’s team had effectively settled the outcome of the two-legged clash in the first match when they confidently beat Breiðablik 7:1, marking their biggest victory in the history of Lech’s appearances in the European arena. The squad from Poznań travelled to Iceland for the second leg, certain of their advancement to the next phase of the qualifiers; hence, the coaching staff decided to rotate the squad.
Calm and controlled are good words to describe the second match against Breiðablik. The hosts were focused on building goal-scoring chances through counterattacks, and after one of their quick breaks, Aron Bjarnason hit the post. Lech’s response was more decisive. The visitors applied high pressing, leading to Filip Szymczak recovering the ball near the end line and passing it to Mikael Ishak. The striker did the rest, scoring from close range.
After the break, the biggest threat came from Luis Palma, who was subbed in at halftime. The winger was very active and, just five minutes after entering the field, his cross hit the post. Toward the end of the match, he was close to capitalising on chaos in Breiðablik’s penalty area, but his shot was slightly off target. In the end, Lech held on to their one-goal lead and returned to Poland with another win in their account.
