Lech Poznań wins bronze at Enea Lech Cup

Lech Poznań finished the Enea Lech Cup with a bronze medal. In the final match of the tournament, the hosts beat FC Porto in a penalty shootout and celebrated a place on the podium.

In the first match of the Champions League group, Lech Poznań beat FC Porto 4:1. The youngsters from the Polish team performed impressively and dominated their opponent since the start of the game. Borys Sawala scored the first goal for Lech and then helped his teammate Bogdan Pisarek add another goal to Lech’s account. Mikołaj Płatek’s side kept control of the match and managed to concede one goal only. In the second game, the Polish squad faced another team from the Iberian Peninsula – Sporting Lisbon. In the previous clash between the two sides, it was the Portuguese squad that triumphed (3:1) hence Lech wanted to get revenge. The two teams provided an exhilarating spectacle whilst trying to dominate their rival. Lech scored the first goal thanks to a quick counterattack that Jakub Pawlik converted effortlessly. The Lisbon squad equalized shortly afterward following a creative set piece. Neither of the teams managed to beat their opponent’s defensive line again, hence they had to share points.

Lech’s objective for the last group match against Shakhtar Donetsk was simple – don’t lose. A win or a draw would qualify the Poznań team for the final. However, it was the Ukrainian side that kicked off the game better. Artem Rybak quickly scored one for Shakhtar but the conceded goal didn’t discourage the hosts – not long later Marcel Mrowiński equalized with a great shot from outside the box. The Ukrainian team responded with another successful attempt from Rybak. A few minutes later Sawala changed the score to 2:2, however, eventually, Shakhtar found a way to beat Lech’s defense once again and they ended up winning 3:2. As a result, the Poznań youngsters would compete for third place against FC Porto.

It was the third time that Lech was going to play against the Portuguese team. The match for the bronze medal was very competitive as neither of the team managed to clearly dominate the pitch. In addition, there weren’t many goal-scoring chances for either of the squads, however, just before halftime, FC Porto found a way to score. The conceded goal had a positive impact on the hosts, and it didn’t take long for Borys Sawala to change the score to 1:1. Since no more goals were scored in the regular time, the winner would be decided in a penalty shootout. Lech eventually beat their Portuguese rival 21:20 (!) and won the bronze medal at the 2021 Enea Lech Cup.
