Lech Poznań lost the first leg of the third qualifying round for the Champions League. Red Star Belgrade proved to be the better team, winning 3:1 at Bułgarska Street. Mikael Ishak scored the only goal for the hosts.
The Serbs were clear favourites in this two-legged tie. The team from Belgrade has been competing in the group or league stages of European competitions for nine consecutive years. Last season, Red Star even managed to earn six Champions League points by defeating Stuttgart and Young Boys.
The high stakes took their toll on Lech Poznań players, who began making mistakes early in the match. The opponents quickly capitalised on the hosts’ carelessness and took the lead. Rade Krunić latched onto the ball outside the penalty area and beat Bartosz Mrozek with a precise shot. The goal seemed to have woken up Niels Frederiksen’s players, and from that point on, they started creating goal-scoring chances. Eventually, Mikael Ishak managed to equalise - the Swede received a perfect cross from João Moutinho and scored with a beautiful volley, lifting the spirits of the fans gathered at Bułgarska Street. Shortly after, Lech came close to taking the lead, but Matheus tipped away Ali Gholizadeh’s shot from just outside the box with his fingertips.
After the break, Lech failed to maintain the same intensity, and five minutes into the second half, they were down by one goal. Krunić took advantage of confusion in the box following a corner kick and beat Mrozek for the second time that night. In the next phase of the match, play was mostly concentrated in the midfield, and coach Niels Frederiksen’s team struggled to pose any threat to the opponent’s goal. In the final minutes, Joel Pereira made a mistake while trying to play the ball out from the back, which Bruno Duarte took advantage of and set the final score to 3:1. As a result, the team from Belgrade took an important step towards advancing to the Champions League playoffs.
