In the first leg of the Europa Conference League round of 16, Lech defeated Djurgårdens IF 2:0. Antonio Milić and Filip Marchwiński scored the goals in front of the home crowd.
The objective was to make history, once again. Two weeks ago, Lech became the first Polish club in 32 years to win the first knockout round of European competition. Now, John van den Brom and his players wanted to aim even higher – that is, for the Europa Conference League quarterfinals. In order to achieve that, they need to eliminate the Swedish Djurgårdens IF for whom the season has just begun.
In the first 30 minutes of the Thursday match, neither of the sides dominated. Both the hosts and the opponents got one goal-scoring opportunity. Filip Szymczak came close to scoring for Lech, but the Swedish keeper intervened confidently.
Gradually, Lech started causing problems for Djurgården’s defensive line and their effort bore fruit. Mikael Ishak was fouled close to the penalty area. Joel Pereira converted the set piece into a beautiful cross which Antonio Milić redirected into the back of the net with his head. It was the defender’s second goal this week.
In the following minutes, Michał Skóraś and Mikael Ishak tried to surprise the Swedish goalkeeper, but their attempts were off target. Meanwhile, Radosław Murawski’s strong shot from a distance was more precise, however, this time Widell Zetterström intervened. Finally, in the 82nd minute, Lech found the back of the net for the second time. Filip Marchwiński’s pressing paid off as the young forward recovered the ball in Djurgården’s box and beat the keeper with a flat, precise shot.
The second leg is scheduled for Thursday, March 16th, at 6:45 pm (Tele2 Arena in Stockholm).
