Lech Poznań kicked off the PKO BP Ekstraklasa season with a loss. Niels Frederiksen’s squad suffered a painful, 1:4 defeat at home against Cracovia. Mikael Ishak scored the only goal for the hosts.
Less than a week before the league's start, Niels Frederiksen's team faced Legia Warsaw in the Polish Super Cup match. The squad from Poznań lost 1:2 to the Polish Cup winners and had to concede superiority to their rivals. Lech hoped to bounce back on the winning track in the first PKO BP Ekstraklasa match of the 2025/2026 season.
Friday’s match began in the worst possible way for the Polish Champions - just a minute into the play, Filip Stojilković took advantage of Michał Gurgul’s mistake and changed the score to 1:0 for the guests. After the goal, the match was paused for 15 minutes due to smoke from the flares. Once the referee resumed the play, the visitors struck again. Lech made another mistake while building up play, and moments later Ajdin Hasić put the ball in the back of Lech’s net for the second time. The hosts were determined to turn the tables, but they lacked pace and precision. However, in the added time, the referee awarded Lech a penalty for a handball and Mikael Ishak converted the set piece into a goal that gave the hosts hope ahead of the second half.
After the break, coach Luka Elsner’s players delivered another blow thanks to Hasić who scored his second goal of the match following a good team offensive attempt. But that wasn’t Cracovia’s last word - an hour into the match, Martin Minchev put the ball in the back of Bartosz Mrozek’s net for the fourth time. The hosts had no chance of closing the gap in the final half hour and suffered a rather painful defeat in the first round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
