The 2022/2023 season of European competition has come to an end. Manchester City triumphed in the Champions League, Sevilla dominated in Europa League, whereas West Ham United lifted the Europa Conference League trophy. In the last competition, Lech Poznań achieved a spectacular result, having gone as far as the quarterfinals. In addition, the Polish team made it to the podium of clubs that added the most points to their national ranking.
5.500 – this is how many points John van den Brom’s squad collected in the past UECL campaign, which ranks them third. The Poznań team was surpassed only by FC Vaduz (6.500) and FC Basel (5.625). Meanwhile, SL Benfica is ranked 4th with 4.833 points, AZ Alkmaar follows with 4.800 points, and Manchester City ended 6th with 4.717 points.
Lech Poznań was the driving force behind Poland’s climb up the UEFA ranking. In the qualifiers, a win is awarded 1 point and a draw 0.5 point. From the group phase on, teams get twice as many points for their results. In total, Lech collected 22 points (a win in UCL qualifiers, 3 wins and 2 draws in UECL qualifiers, 6 wins and 4 draws in the main phase of UECL). However, only 5.5 points have been added to the national ranking since the number of points is divided by the number of teams from the same country playing in European competitions.
Overall, Polish clubs have added a total of 7.750 points to the UEFA national ranking this past season which is a record-breaking achievement. Of course, Lech has made the most significant difference in the 2022/2023 campaign. Raków Częstochowa (1.250 points), Lech Gdańsk (0.625), and Pogoń Szczecin (0.375) have also positively influenced Poland’s position in the UEFA ranking, however, it is mainly thanks to Lech’s sporting achievements that the red-and-white country is now ranked 24th.
