Gumny’s 13th appearance as centre-back
In Saturday’s match against Pogoń Szczecin, Robert Gumny played as a centre-back – an unfamiliar role for the defender. He performed excellently, earned strong reviews, and Lech Poznań won 2:1 - a score that helped the team remain at the top of the Ekstraklasa. “It’s not my preferred position, but I’m glad I could help the team,” said the 27-year-old.
According to Transfermarkt, Gumny had previously played 12 matches as a centre-back. Eleven of those came during his time at FC Augsburg in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, and one for the Polish national team in a World Cup qualifier against San Marino (5:0). That, however, was five years ago. This latest appearance was his 13th – and, fortunately, not an unlucky one.
“It doesn’t matter where I play. The team needed me at centre-back, so I did the job. It’s not my favourite position, but I’m pleased I could contribute to a very important win. It got a bit tense towards the end, but we took the three points back to Poznań, and we’re still top of the league,” highlighted Gumny.
Pundits praised the right-back for his performance. He was moved to the centre of the defensive line due to injuries, which ruled Mateusz Skrzypczak and Antonio Milić out. Moreover, Alex Douglas has been sidelined for some time. As a result, Gumny partnered with Wojciech Mońka in central defence.
“I felt really comfortable out there, though the opposition helped a bit. They didn’t play with a traditional striker - no real physical battles or tussles in the box. It suited me that they were more like wingers, so we could rely on pace and anticipation, a bit like playing out wide. As a right-back, I like to drive forward down the line, which wasn’t possible here, but overall it was fine - I’m happy with my performance,” concluded Lech’s homegrown player.
