For the first time in history
For the first time in Lech’s 95-year history, the team scored 3 goals from penalties in a single game. The three set pieces awarded to Lech on Friday against Termalica Bruk-Bet Nieciecza put the match in the history books.
Bjelica’s team kicked off the spring league round with a 3:0 win against Termalica Bruk-Bet Nieciecza. Kownacki scored the opening goal in the first half after the referee whistled a penalty kick. In the second half, two more penalty kicks were awarded to Lech by referee Gil. Robak converted the first one into a goal late in the second half, while Jevtic set the final score to 3:0 in the injury time.
“We talked about the game in the dressing room afterwards and neither of us could remember a similar match,” said Maciej Wilusz after the league clash ended. Maciej Makuszewski, Lech’s winger, agreed with his teammate. “I don’t remember a game like this [either]. However, it’s football and things like this happen.”
Never before was Lech’s team awarded three penalty kicks in a single game. However, Lech’s history books go back to 1948 only and the details of the matches played before are unknown.
In its first game in the top football division, Lech was awarded a penalty. Polka was the one who scored the important goal in a clash with Widzew. A year later Lech made history again, this time scoring two penalties when facing Polonia Bytom. Sloma and Aniola converted the penalty kicks into goals that day.
Meanwhile, in the season 1999/2000, the team from Poznan scored a penalty in three games in a row – against Ruch Chorzow, IFK Goteborg and Wisla Plock. Piskula and Zurawski were the goal scorers, however, their effort did not help Lech win. All three games ended with 1:2 loss.
Therefore, there is no doubt that the Friday clash has marked itself in the history books.
