Best run in four years

After a difficult start to the spring campaign, Lech Poznań have been unmatched in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa. Niels Frederiksen’s side has collected 29 points in their last 12 league matches, with the club recording a run this strong only once in the past five years, during the closing stages of the title-winning 2021/22 season.

Lech failed to pick up a single point from their opening two league fixtures of 2026 and, after 19 rounds, sat ninth in the table. The reigning Champions trailed leaders Wisła Płock and Górnik Zabrze by seven points, while the gap to third-placed Jagiellonia Białystok stood at six, with the side from Podlasie still having a game in hand against GKS Katowice. Defending the title already looked like a huge challenge, but the months that followed brought excellent form from Niels Frederiksen’s side and a steady climb up the standings.

Now, Lech sit top of the table thanks to an impressive haul of 29 points from their last 12 league matches. An average of 2.42 points per game has come from nine wins, two draws and just one defeat. Importantly, for half of that period, Lech were playing every three days, yet it did little to slow their momentum. Until March, Frederiksen’s squad was still competing in both the UEFA Conference League and the Polish Cup, but still managed to collect 15 points from six league fixtures during that spell.

At the decisive stage of the campaign, the current league leaders have hit top gear. It is Lech’s best league run in four years - since the closing weeks of the season that delivered the club’s eighth Polish Championship, under Maciej Skorża, during which the Pole's squad produced the same record as the current team. The only slightly weaker run came at the beginning of Frederiksen’s tenure, when Lech picked up one point fewer over the same number of matches.

“I expect that in my second season at Lech we will become even stronger than we were in my first year in Poznań,” said Niels Frederiksen shortly after the end of his debut campaign as Lech’s coach. The current statistics show that the team has met Dane's expectations.
