On Wednesday, Lech completed another signing. Gustav Berggren joins Niels Frederiksen's squad on a permanent transfer from New York Red Bulls. The central midfielder has signed a three-year contract with the Polish Champions.
On Saturday, Berggren arrived in Poznań with his family and watched Sunday’s PKO BP Ekstraklasa match between Lech and Piast Gliwice (3:0) from the stands. On Monday morning, he underwent medical tests, then finalised the final steps two days later and made the transfer official.
“Gustav Berggren joins us on a permanent transfer from New York Red Bulls. He has signed a three-year contract, which will run until June 30th, 2029. The 28-year-old Swedish central midfielder is well known in Poland from his time at Raków Częstochowa, where he made more than 100 appearances. He will certainly bring valuable experience from playing in the Ekstraklasa and European competitions. He has the qualities to become one of our leaders, both on the pitch and in the dressing room. His arrival will strengthen competition in midfield, and importantly, he is ready to take on the challenge straight away, having already featured in the current MLS season,” said Lech's Sporting Director, Tomasz Rząsa.
The Swede made his Allsvenskan debut for BK Häcken on May 15th, 2016. Apart from a brief loan spell at Varbergs BoIS, he remained with the club until the summer of 2022, when he joined Raków Częstochowa. He made 105 appearances for the Polish club in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing seven assists.
Berggren made his Ekstraklasa debut on August 7th, 2022, against Górnik Zabrze (1:0). Four years later, he is set to return to the Polish pitches. In between, the Swede competed for New York Red Bulls, which he joined in the summer of 2025. Berggren has made 12 appearances in the current MLS campaign, providing two assists. He is already up to speed competitively, having featured as recently as August 2nd against Orlando City (3:2), when he also registered an assist.
“I’m very happy to be here. I’ve joined a big club, currently the best in Poland. As soon as the opportunity to return to the Polish league came up, everything happened very quickly. Matches in Poznań were always special for me because of the atmosphere in the stands. I’m delighted that I’ll now have these fans behind me, supporting me. I know Leo Bengtsson and Patrik Wålemark very well. I spoke to both of them, especially Leo. They encouraged me to come here, although they didn’t really need to, because I was positive about the move from the very beginning. Now I can’t wait to play my first matches wearing the new colours. I want to win as many games as possible and, ultimately, lift trophies,” said Berggren.
The 28-year-old cannot be registered for the Europa League third qualifying round, meaning he will have to wait until the next stage of the competition for a possible European debut. At Lech, the Swede will wear the number 5 shirt.
