Lech Poznań got back on the winning track in great style. On Tuesday evening, Niels Frederiksen’s squad beat Breiðablik 7:1 at home. As a result, the Polish side is very close to advancing to the third qualifying round of the Champions League. With it, they have a guaranteed spot in the European competitions this autumn.
The first half of the match was eventful and started brilliantly for coach Niels Frederiksen’s side. Antonio Milić opened the scoring sheet in the 3rd minute by converting a corner kick pass from Joel Pereira into a precise header that gave no chance to Anton Einarsson. Lech didn’t want to settle for just one goal and continued to put pressure on their opponent. However, the hosts failed to score a second, and somewhat unexpectedly, Breiðablik equalised - Milić fouled Valgeir Valgeirsson in the penalty area, and Hoskuldur Gunnlaugsson converted the penalty into an equaliser. That goal motivated Lech even more, and soon after, the tables had turned when Viktor Örn Margeirsson saw a red card for a crucial tactical foul on Mikael Ishak. The one-man advantage helped Lech regain the lead not long after when Milić was fouled inside the box and Ishak converted the set piece into a second goal. That goal marked the beginning of a scoring spree by the hosts. In quick succession, Joel Pereira, Leo Bengtsson, and Ishak (again) added to the tally, which meant that when the referee announced halftime, the scoreboard showed a 5:1 advantage for the hosts.
In the second half, the game's tempo slowed down. Lech continued to dominate, but it didn’t translate into clear goal-scoring opportunities. That changed in the 77th minute, when Filip Jagiełło beat Einarsson with a shot from outside the box. The final score of 7:1 was sealed by Ishak, who converted a third penalty into the last goal of the night, completing his first hat-trick for Lech.
Tuesday’s victory is Lech’s highest win in the European competition.
