Salamon qualified for EURO 2024
In his 12th cap, Bartosz Salamon helped the Polish national team qualify for EURO 2024 in the playoff clash. Michał Probierz’s squad ended up winning against Wales in the penalty shootout (5:4).
The 32-year-old defender returned to the national team after a year-long break. In March last year, Salamon played his last game for the Polish side – it was another EURO 2024 qualifier, against Albania (1:0). In the Tuesday playoff clash with Wales, the defender replaced Jan Bednarek in the second half.
The match between Wales and Poland was balanced – neither of the teams was willing to take unnecessary risks, hence the fans saw few goal-scoring opportunities. Therefore, it was unsurprising that the two squads failed to find the back of the net during the 90 minutes. The goalless streak extended throughout the extra time and, as a result, a penalty shootout would decide which team would qualify for EURO 2024. Poland ended up triumphing 5:4 thanks to Wojciech Szczęsny’s save in the last round of the shootout and has qualified for the summer European Championship.
