Piast Gliwice - Lech Poznań 1:0

Lech Poznań have had an unsuccessful start to the spring round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa. On Tuesday, Niels Frederiksen’s squad suffered its second consecutive defeat, losing 0:1 to Piast Gliwice.

Frederiksen’s side rather unexpectedly lost the recent clash with Lechia Gdańsk (1:3). Lech made too many defensive mistakes, which the guests were quick to exploit. As the reigning Polish Champions, they were expected to bounce back in the Tuesday away match against Piast Gliwice. The two sides met at the beginning of December in the Polish Cup, a clash which Lech won 2:0 thanks to goals from Mikael Ishak and Yannick Agnero.

Tuesday’s match could have started perfectly for Frederiksen’s players. In the very first minute, Pablo Rodríguez’s cross caused chaos in Piast’s penalty area, but the team from Poznań failed to take advantage of it. As the game went on, the hosts began to assert themselves, which led to a penalty after the ball struck Luis Palma’s hand. However, Bartosz Mrozek won the one-on-one clash with Patryk Dziczek, correctly guessing the shot’s direction and, therefore, keeping his team in the game. Towards the end of the first half, Leo Bengtsson wasted a clear-cut chance - the Swede found himself one-on-one with František Plach, but the goalkeeper made a crucial save with his leg.

After the break, Lech were once again the more dangerous side. Rodríguez found himself in excellent scoring positions twice, but his efforts went wide, while Ishak also failed to capitalise on a one-on-one opportunity. In the second half, however, the hosts delivered a single but deadly blow. A cross from the right was headed home by substitute Andreas Katsantonis. The Cypriot’s goal secured Piast's victory. On Saturday, Lech will travel to Silesia once again - this time to face Górnik Zabrze – with the hope of winning their first league points of 2026.
