Lech’s fight for a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League has become more difficult. Niels Frederiksen’s side lost the first leg of the Round of 16 to Shakhtar Donetsk 1:3.
The Polish Champions approached the Conference League clash after a Polish Cup defeat to Górnik Zabrze (0:1) and a league loss to Widzew Łódź (1:2). The team from Poznań wanted to bounce back and make an important step towards the quarter-finals of the European competition. However, the task wasn’t easy, as Shakhtar Donetsk, a regular participant in the international arena, was their opponent.
From the start, the match was very evenly balanced. Both sides tried to impose their own style, which meant the play was largely concentrated in the midfield. The guests struck first, taking advantage of a counter-attack. Kauã Elias shielded the ball well before releasing Marlon Gomes into a clear scoring position, and the latter beat Bartosz Mrozek. Towards the end of the first half, Lech should have been awarded a penalty for handball by one of Shakhtar’s defenders, but the referee’s whistle remained silent.
After the break, Shakhtar scored their second goal. Marlon joined the attack from deep, the ball bounced off several players inside the penalty area, and eventually reached Newerton. The Brazilian made no mistake in a one-on-one situation and doubled the lead. The goal briefly unsettled Frederiksen’s side, who needed a moment to regroup. Lech pulled one back 20 minutes before the end of the match. A pass from João Pereira was converted from close range by Mikael Ishak. Just as it seemed the hosts were getting closer to an equaliser, Shakhtar scored a third goal - Isaque sealed the result with an overhead kick.
