Lech Poznań - Aarhus GF 1:5

Lech kicked off this season's European campaign in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, where they were drawn against Danish Champions, Aarhus GF. The first leg, played in Randers, ended in an impressive 4:1 victory for the Polish side thanks to Patrik Wålemark’s brace and goals from Terry Yegbe and Mikael Ishak.

In addition, at the weekend, Lech began their domestic league campaign. They opened the new PKO BP Ekstraklasa season with a goalless draw away to Cracovia, bringing home a single point.

The return leg got off to a lively start. Just two minutes in, Wålemark burst into the penalty area, beat his defender with clever footwork and forced the first save of the evening from Aarhus’s goalkeeper. Moments later, Mikael Ishak tried his luck from distance, but his effort was slightly off target.

After 15 minutes, the Danish side began to grow into the game. Kristian Arnstad had the first clear opportunity for Aarhus, but Mateusz Lis stopped his effort. Lech responded within minutes, but Hedenstad intervened impressively and saved Ishak's powerful header.

In the 21st minute, Lech appealed for a penalty following a suspected handball inside the box. After a VAR review, however, the referee continued the play. Less than 15 minutes before halftime, Aarhus broke the deadlock as Tobias Bach found the back of the net. Lech pushed for an equaliser before the break, but neither Pablo Rodríguez nor Luis Palma, who had two promising chances, could find a way past the Danish defence.

Wålemark threatened again shortly into the second half, but his shot was blocked once more. Aarhus responded immediately with a swift counterattack, but Lis intervened comfortably. A minute later, the guests were awarded a penalty after a handball inside Lech’s box, and Arnstad converted the set piece to double their lead.

Wålemark continued to look dangerous and tested the Aarhus defence again in the 56th minute, but without success. Palma also had a chance from a free kick, but once again, Hedenstad rose to the challenge. The Danish side kept pressing and, with 15 minutes of normal time remaining, scored their third goal of the night to level the tie on aggregate and force extra time.

The added minutes brought renewed drama. In the 95th minute, Lech worked the ball brilliantly through midfield before Filip Jagiełło finished confidently to restore their aggregate advantage. The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Frederik Tingager struck just minutes later to make it 4:1.

Lech had one final golden opportunity before the break in extra time. Daniel Håkans sprinted clear down the wing, beat his defender for pace and passed to Yannik Agnero, but the latter failed to convert the chance into a crucial goal. Neither side could find a winner in the final 15 minutes, meaning that the outcome would be decided by a penalty shootout.

Jagiełło, Allahyar Sayyadmanesh, Antoni Kozubal, Yannik Agnero, and Joel Pereira stepped up for Lech in the shootout. Three of their five penalties found the net despite another outstanding display from Hedenstad, but Aarhus proved more clinical, missing only once. The Danish side sealed their place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League after a dramatic evening in Poznań.

Lech's European journey will now continue in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, where they will face the Faroese club, KÍ Klaksvík. The first leg will be played at the Enea Stadium on August 6th, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
