Lech made a poor start to the spring round. Niels Frederiksen’s squad lost their first two league matches of 2026, complicating their bid to defend the Polish Championship title. However, they finally picked up all three points at the third attempt, beating Górnik Zabrze 1:0 in an away clash.
The team coached by Niels Frederiksen kicked off 2026 with two poor league performances. The squad from Poznań suffered defeats to Lechia Gdańsk (1:3) and Piast Gliwice (0:1), which increased their distance to the leading teams. On Saturday, Lech faced their toughest challenge so far as they travelled to face the second-placed Górnik Zabrze in an away clash.
In the previous two rounds, the Polish Champions had started matches poorly, but this time they avoided that mistake. Lech took the lead in the 10th minute, following a clever execution of a corner kick. Patrik Wålemark delivered the ball to the near post, Leo Bengtsson brilliantly flicked it on, and Mikael Ishak finished the move with a precise header. From that moment, Frederiksen’s side was able to control the course of the match, and they did so very effectively.
Górnik mainly looked for chances from set pieces, but Lech defended well. The hosts came close to equalising early in the second half when Patrik Hellebrand unleashed a dangerous shot from outside the box, but the attempt was saved by Bartosz Mrozek. Towards the end of the match, Lech could have sealed a more comfortable lead, but Yannick Agnero failed to convert a great goal-scoring opportunity, with Rafał Janicki clearing his effort off the goal line. That missed chance did not come back to haunt the team from Poznań, who, after two consecutive defeats, was finally able to claim the much-desired three points.
