In the 25th round of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznań defeated league leaders Zagłębie 1:0. Thanks to a goal from Mikael Ishak, Niels Frederiksen and his players returned from Lubin with three very valuable points and moved up to second place in the table. The squad from Poznań is now separated from the top spot only by goal difference.
The beginning of March was exceptionally intense for Frederiksen’s side. Their first match against Raków ended in victory for the Poznań team, as they edged past the team from Częstochowa 4:3 with a last-minute goal from Yannick Agnero in the extra time. Unfortunately for Lech, their subsequent opponents proved too strong. First, the team from Poznań was beaten by Górnik Zabrze, which saw them eliminated from the Polish Cup, and then they returned from Łódź empty-handed. Last week, Frederiksen’s squad also failed to come out on top in their clash with Shakhtar Donetsk. That is why it was essential to end this unfortunate run and secure a win crucial to defending their Championship title.
Both teams, fully aware of the importance of the match in the Polish title race, started at a very high intensity. The first shot on goal came from the hosts, but it was off target. In the 7th minute, Lech launched an attack. After building from their own half, Ali Gholizadeh delivered the ball into the penalty area, where Pablo Rodríguez reached it. The Spaniard passed it to Leo Bengtsson, who was in a better shooting position. The Swede struck powerfully, but the ball hit the post and fell straight to Mikael Ishak, who calmly slotted it home to open the scoring.
The goal gave Lech momentum – just a few minutes later, Patrik Wålemark attempted a long-range shot, but Burić intervened successfully. In the 25th minute, Lech’s top scorer tried to double the lead, but, once again, the Zagłębie goalkeeper was equal to the task. Shortly before half-time, the guests made one more attempt at changing the score, but it also proved unsuccessful.
At the start of the second half, and following changes made by coach Leszek Ojrzyński, the hosts found renewed energy. As early as the 48th minute, they attempted to equalise, but their effort was effectively blocked by Lech’s players. A very similar situation occurred a few minutes later. In the 65th minute, Reguła tried an overhead kick, but the ball went over the bar. Two further attempts from the hosts were also denied, with Bartosz Mrozek confidently intervening. Just before the final whistle, Lech searched for another goal that would have given them a better head-to-head record - and, consequently, the top spot - but without success.
Currently, Lech sit in second place in the table, just behind Zagłębie Lubin. Frederiksen and his players have more challenges ahead of them in the near future: the return leg against Shakhtar Donetsk in Cracow and a home fixture against Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza.
