Lech Poznań - Arka Gdynia 1:1

In Friday’s league clash, Lech Poznań were forced to settle for a draw against the newly promoted Arka Gdynia. Despite dropping points, Niels Frederiksen’s side remains top of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table and is edging ever closer to the Polish Championship title. Luis Palma scored the only goal for the team from Poznań.

Niels Frederiksen’s squad is now just a step away from retaining the title. Lech have occupied the top spot in the league table for five consecutive rounds, although their closest rivals continue to put pressure. It is worth noting that Lech’s main challengers in the title race have all played one match fewer than the team from Poznań. Due to the Polish Cup final, fixtures involving Jagiellonia Białystok, Raków Częstochowa and Górnik Zabrze were postponed and are scheduled to take place midweek ahead of the 33rd round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.

The situation looks far less favourable for the side from Gdynia. After five years spent in the lower divisions, Arka secured a promotion back to Poland’s top flight, but they are now battling to avoid relegation. Like the other sides mentioned above, their fixture was also rearranged because their direct rivals, Górnik Zabrze, were taking part in the Polish Cup. Arka were six points adrift of safety, meaning clashes with both the league leaders and runners-up could prove crucial.

The match began at a frantic pace. Lech created their first chance as early as the second minute. Antoni Kozubal played the ball from midfield to Patrik Walemark, who was positioned on the right flank. The Swede beat several defenders before delivering a cross into the box. Lech’s captain, Mikael Ishak, tried heading it into the net, but his effort crashed against the crossbar. The next opportunity to break the deadlock came in the 19th minute. After building from the back, Joel Pereira picked up possession, glided past several Arka players and passed the ball to Ishak, but the opponent’s defence reacted just in time. Minutes later, referee Frankowski awarded a free-kick to the hosts. Walemark whipped the ball in dangerously, though once again it failed to find the net. Antoni Kozubal also tested Grobelny, but the goalkeeper intervened successfully.

To everyone’s surprise, the guests were the ones to open the scoring in the 52nd minute. Following a scramble in the penalty area, Hermoso found the back of the net. However, Arka’s lead lasted only five minutes. Ishak was fouled by one of the opponents, but Luis Palma skilfully collected the ball, beat several Arka defenders and slotted home the equaliser. Palma nearly put his side ahead again in the 73rd minute, but his shot was slightly off target.

Before the final whistle, Walemark, Michał Gurgul and Yannick Agnero all attempted to change the score, but Lech ended up being unable to find a second goal on Friday evening. Deep into stoppage time, the guests had one last chance of their own, but Bartosz Mrozek produced an important save.

Lech remain at the top of the table and continue their march towards another Polish Championship. They have two more games left to play - an away trip to Radom and a home clash with Wisła Płock.
