Lech Poznań faced Kuopion Palloseura in the first leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League knockout stage playoffs. Niels Frederiksen’s players lived up to their status as favourites and won 2:0 in Tampere thanks to goals from Antoni Kozubal and Taofeek Ismaheel.
In recent weeks, Lech have found their rhythm and, after a more difficult start to the year, begun to collect victories. The Poznań side travelled to Finland in good spirits, having beaten Górnik Zabrze 1:0 and Piast Gliwice 3:0. KuPS, by contrast, approached the tie amid significant changes. Several players and the manager had departed the Kuopio-based club, and their Finnish Cup campaign had proved rather disappointing.
Niels Frederiksen’s men made a strong start and quickly took the lead. Antoni Kozubal took advantage of chaos inside KuPS’s box, reacted fastest, and found the net from close range. Less than two minutes later, the midfielder was struck with an elbow by Joslyn Luyeye-Lutumba, for which the winger was shown a red card.
Lech remained in control of the match, but from that moment, the hosts focused on deep defending, trying to deprive the guests of space. In the closing minutes of the first half, Taofeek Ismaheel built an attack with Mikael Ishak in a tight area, which the Nigerian finished with a low shot past Johannes Kreidl to increase the lead.
The second half looked very similar to the first 45 minutes. Lech continued to press for a third goal, but KuPS’s goalkeeper was in excellent form, repeatedly denying the Polish side. The reigning Polish Champions ultimately secured a 2:0 victory and are now in a very strong position ahead of the return leg.
