Spartak Trnava – Lech Poznań 3:1
The trip to Slovakia did not go according to plan. Lech’s objective was to seal the deal and advance to the fourth qualification round of the Europa Conference League but Spartak Trnava defeated the Polish side 3:1 and ended up triumphing in the two-leg clash.
The line-up for the Thursday clash in Slovakia was the same as the week before, however, John van den Brom’s players did not play anything as they did in the first leg. Lech had problems exchanging accurate passes; they played nervously and gradually problems started accumulating.
As a result, before the referee announced halftime, the team from Poznań was already down by one goal. Kelvin Ofori surprised Filip Bednarek with a shot near the post and successfully changed the score. Lech was supposed to equalize early in the second half, but instead, Spartak found the back of the net, for the second time. This time Erik Daniel added his name to the goal scorer’s sheet.
At that moment, it was Spartak who was up by one goal in the two-leg clash, however, Lech did manage to turn the tables. Kristoffer Velde’s shot into the corner of the goal meant that it was 3:3 on aggregate and the match would extend into extra time.
In the end, the two sides didn’t play over 90 minutes because Lukas Stetina scored a beautiful goal with a bicycle kick and put Spartak through to the next stage of the Europa Conference League.
Lech failed to score again that night, hence they had to say goodbye to the European competition.
