Pogoń Szczecin – Lech Poznań 2:2

A good overall performance and impressive possession of the ball weren’t enough for Lech to beat Pogoń in the 9th round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa. 9 minutes into the added time, the squad from Szczecin scored an equalizer and the two teams had to share points.

Following the intense Thursday clash with Villarreal CF in the Europa Conference League (3:3), John van den Brom was forced to make changes in the starting line-up and rest a few players. Barry Douglas, Afonso Sousa, and Filip Szymczak all found themselves in the first eleven. For the Scottish defensive player, the Sunday match wasn’t a successful one – 8 minutes into the game, he was easily dribbled past and, as a result, Sebastian Kowalczyk scored the first goal of the match.

Lech’s reaction to the conceded goal was positive – instead of panicking or retreating, the players from Poznań got back to work. In the 20th minute, they converted their efforts into a goal – Jesper Karlstrom dribbled past the goalkeeper and sent the ball alongside the goal line. Luckily, in the whole chaos inside Pogoń box, Mikael Ishak found himself in the right place at the right time and he redirected the ball into the net.

Before halftime, the guests had another opportunity to score, but this time Douglas’s attempt of a header from inside the box was off target. However, not long into the second half, the scoreboard showed a two-one score for the team from Poznań. Ishak sent the ball from the right flank into Pogoń’s penalty area and Michał Skóraś successfully converted the chance into a second goal.

John van den Brom’s squad kept on dominating on the pitch and creating scoring opportunities, but they weren’t efficient enough to seal the deal with another goal. The wasted chances took revenge on Lech in the added time when Douglas won an air battle inside his own box but at the same time committed a foul which, after seeing the replays, the referee decided was ground for a penalty kick. The Scottish player received a red card and Kamil Drygas converted the set piece into an equalizer. As a result, the two teams were forced to share points.

Lech won’t have much time to rest after the match against Pogoń – on Thursday, they will welcome Austria Vienna at Bułgarska Street. The Europa Conference League clash will kick off at 9 pm.
