Lech Poznań - Lechia Gdańsk 0:0

Just a few rounds before the end of the season, Lech Poznan faced Lechia Gdansk at home. The match ended with a goalless draw that helped Lech advance to the second rank in the league table.

For both teams there was a lot at stake. A loss for both clubs would mean that they were practically out of the race for the Championship, but also for the Europa League. Therefore, the teams were determined to gain control over the match as soon as possible and score early in the game.

Lech successfully managed to enclose Lechia on its half of the pitch, however, that also meant that the hosts had to watch out for Lechia’s counterattacks. During one of such rapid offensive actions Kostevych was forced to foul Wolski before Lechia got too close to Lech’s box. The defender made an error shortly afterward when he lost the ball to Paixao, but luckily for Lech, the forward’s shot was off target. 10 minutes later Lech had a good chance to score. Radut’s cross from the corner of the pitch flew past Maloca and reached Robak. Unfortunately the forward was caught off guard and failed to fire a shot before the ball was taken away from him.

The fans had to wait over half an hour for a shot on target. In the 34th minute Majewski’s attempt from outside the box was stopped by the goalkeeper. The midfielder had one good scoring chance a couple of minute earlier, but instead of shooting, he decided to dribble and he was blocked. Similarly, on the other end of the pitch, Wolski finished his individual run with a shot that was eventually blocked by Gajos.

The opening minutes of the second half were indisputably dominated by Lech who had a couple of good scoring chances from set pieces. However, the hosts had no luck whatsoever. Majewski sent a precise cross into Lechia’s box, but Tralka was late and failed to redirect the ball into the back of the net. Similarly, in the 54th minute Radut’s pass from a free kick was extended by Kedziora, but Wilusz, just like his teammate, failed to reach the ball.

After an hour of play Lechia started dominating the match. Wolski had a great scoring opportunity after the dribbled past 3 defenders and raced into the box. However, instead of firing a strong shot, the midfielder tried to lob Putnocky and failed. Vitoria came close to scoring too, but his attempt was a bit off target. Lech had a couple of good offensive actions too, but the hosts visibly struggled to cause problems to Lechia’s defensive line.

Jevtic and Kownacki were sent in on the pitch shortly before final time and they were meant to bring fresh energy to Lech’s offensive line. In the 75th minute Gajos could have scored a winner after Kownacki raced into the box and sent a good pass to his teammate, but Gajos’ attempt was off target. 10 minutes later Jevtic tried scoring as well, but although his shot caused problems to Lechia’s keeper, the attempt was too weak to fall into the back of the net. Since neither of the teams managed to score despite all efforts, the match ended with a goalless draw and the clubs were forced to share points.
